Station Power Upgrade: Staff Briefing
All personnel should be informed that the International Space Station Programme is entering a critical phase of its power upgrade. Two astronauts have completed a seven-hour, eleven-minute spacewalk to install a new solar array, which is intended to strengthen the station’s energy supply. Once the final array is installed on November 5, the station will have up to 30% more available power. This additional capacity will support critical operations, including laboratory experiments, communication systems and preparations for the station’s eventual controlled deorbit. Project managers have confirmed that further updates will be circulated through the internal noticeboard, and staff who are involved in maintenance or scheduling should review the revised timetable before their next shift.
Restricted Areas and Safety Requirements
During the upgrade period, several engineering zones will be classified as restricted areas, where only authorised employees may enter. Before entering these zones, staff must attend a short safety briefing and present a valid access badge. Protective equipment, including insulated gloves and approved eyewear, has to be worn whenever electrical panels are being inspected. Employees who notice damaged cables, unusual alarms or irregular power readings are required to report the issue immediately to the duty supervisor. Because the new solar array will increase the amount of electricity distributed through the station’s systems, temporary shutdowns may be arranged at short notice. Department heads should ensure that sensitive devices are properly backed up and that no essential data is lost during these interruptions.
Training, Leave and Expense Claims
Employees who have been assigned to the upgrade support team must complete the updated training module before the final installation date. The module explains how the additional power supply affects daily procedures, emergency responses and equipment checks. If an employee needs to attend external workshops, prior approval must be obtained from the line manager, and all reasonable travel costs can be claimed through the standard expense system. Annual leave may still be requested; however, priority will be given to staff whose responsibilities are not directly connected with the November 5 installation. Any request to change shifts should be submitted at least three working days in advance, unless an urgent operational requirement has been announced. By following these arrangements, departments can maintain normal service while the station receives its powerful upgrade.
