Free Dental Checks at Riverside Community Health Centre
From next Monday, the Riverside Community Health Centre will offer free dental checks to children under twelve who live in the local area. The checks, which take about fifteen minutes, are designed to catch early tooth decay before it becomes painful. Parents are asked to bring their child's health card and to arrive ten minutes before the appointment time. Places are limited to forty children per week, so early booking is strongly recommended.
A Simple Liquid Instead of a Drill
A large clinical trial has confirmed that a cheap liquid, painted onto a decayed tooth in seconds, can stop small cavities from getting worse. No drilling, injection or anaesthesia is required, and the whole procedure is usually finished in under five minutes. The treatment is already used in several countries, but it has not yet been approved for general use in the United States. Dentists at the centre say it is particularly suitable for young children who are too frightened to undergo surgery.
Fees, Opening Hours and Conditions
The initial check is free of charge. If the liquid treatment is recommended, the cost is $35 per tooth; children who receive government support pay $10. The clinic opens at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, with a late session until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. Please note that the clinic is closed on public holidays, and that treatment cannot be given to children who have taken antibiotics during the previous 48 hours.
How to Book
Bookings can be made by phone or through the centre's website. When you book, you will be asked to confirm your child's date of birth and to say whether he or she has visited a dentist before. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the appointment will be charged a fee of $15.
