Working at the Heliophysics Research Centre
The Sun’s quieter regions may look peaceful, but they contain an intricate magnetic world. At our centre, researchers use a balloon-borne telescope high above Earth to study delicate, thread-like structures that are woven through the solar atmosphere. These structures appear to be shaped by twisting motions on the Sun’s surface, and their behaviour changes with height. Because the work is highly sensitive, all employees are expected to follow strict data and safety protocols. Staff should also remember that observations are shared with international partners and must never be discussed with the media without permission. Newcomers often find the terminology difficult at first, but training and daily briefings help them understand how magnetic fields are mapped inside towering jets of solar material.
New Staff Training Programme
Every new employee completes a two-day safety course before working with balloon equipment. The induction also covers how to interpret magnetic data, how to keep accurate records, and how to coordinate with field teams. Each recruit is paired with an experienced mentor, who reviews progress at the end of the first month. Trainees are encouraged to ask questions during the daily briefing, as this is often the quickest way to learn. Staff who fail to complete the course will not be assigned to observation campaigns. In addition, all trainees must attend a short workshop on research ethics before their first field trip. The programme is designed to be practical rather than theoretical, so participants spend most afternoons observing experienced colleagues at work.
Field Campaign Leave and Expenses
Staff taking part in a field campaign must apply for leave at least two weeks in advance. Travel and accommodation are paid by the centre, but personal items are not covered. To claim reimbursement, employees should submit an expense claim within ten working days of returning, together with original receipts. Late claims may be refused unless there are exceptional circumstances. During campaigns, protective clothing must be worn at all times, and any accident must be reported immediately. Staff are also advised to check the daily itinerary, because launch times can change suddenly according to weather conditions. If a campaign is delayed, employees should contact their line manager rather than making their own travel arrangements.
